Denver Broncos Tickets - Broncos Select Tebow, Make Biggest Splash in Draft
When the Denver Broncos traded up to select Florida quarterback Tim Tebow toward the end of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, it took the entire league by surprise. After recently trading for Brady Quinn and shipping out Brandon Marshall, the Broncos appeared to be one of the more unlikely places for Tebow to land. Even though there will certainly be plenty of dissenters who disapprove of the maneuver, there does seem to be a method to the madness. Even if it's impossible to determine how it will turn out, the 2010 season certainly got more interesting for the Denver Broncos, and Tebow is poised to help sell <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/denver-broncos-tickets/">Denver Broncos tickets</a> in the process.
By now, everyone knows about Tebow's shortcomings as a quarterback and the general problems his game has in converting to the pro game. After all, Tebow has never been a pocket quarterback and has considerable things to learn before he can be an effective pro. Adding Tebow to the roster with two other quarterbacks – Kyle Orton and Quinn – also seems a bit of an odd move, particularly considering Tebow's limitations. So what in the world could head coach Josh McDaniels have been thinking?
One thing is that Tebow should be able to help improve his team's ability to score in the red zone. Not even McDaniels is likely to think that he can turn Tebow into a pocket passer as a rookie, but that doesn't mean there aren't other options. With Tebow's hybrid abilities as a quarterback, he actually is perfectly suited to run a style of offense similar to the Wildcat, which has become popular around the league over the past few seasons. McDaniels may be able to utilize Tebow's style of quarterback to his advantage in short stints and he could actually be quite menacing in short-yardage and red zone opportunities.
This type of style would provide a much easier transition to the NFL, particularly in the early going. With McDaniels confident enough to select him in the first round, you know he has an idea of how he wants to use Tebow in his first year in Denver. The reality of the NFL these days is that you really can't afford to draft players who aren't going to play in their rookie seasons. With the Wildcat predominately run out of the shotgun, McDaniels could use Tebow's mobility, overall athleticism and toughness to his advantage and he could prove very difficult to stop if Denver can learn how to blend his talents into a unique offensive scheme. If Tebow came out of the woodwork to run for six or more touchdowns and throw for a few more in limited time in 2010, it should come as no surprise.
Getting him on the field early in a limited role will also be very helpful for his overall development; after all, analysts and fans are going to be quick to call him a bust if he doesn't produce. McDaniels is a smart enough offensively minded coach to play to Tebow's strengths and not turn him into a drop back and pass quarterback. If he shows signs of success in the early going in a limited role, perhaps the next step would be to stretch him into a pocket passer in the future.
The other thing that McDaniels will get is Tebow's intangibles, which have been heavily talked about over the past few months, and for good reason. Tebow is very coachable and will be willing to thrust himself into whatever role and whatever scheme McDaniels has in mind. In a way, Tebow's development should take place completely separately from the battle between Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton. While either Quinn or Orton should emerge in 2010 as the Broncos pocket quarterback for the future, Tebow is almost certainly going to be used in other roles and will eventually land as the Broncos permanent backup.
There is still a significant possibility that Tebow never fully translates into a success in the NFL and certainly he is a tremendous risk. For Tebow, however, he seems to be in the perfect situation. Tebow has no pressure to be a starting quarterback in the near future and has a very creative offensive-minded coach who will find ways to utilize his strengths. Before everyone bashes the Broncos and their pick, they should embrace the possibility that McDaniels has a plan. McDaniels is going to emerge out of this as either the goat or the hero, but don't forget that he was formerly Bill Belichick's prodigy. It should certainly be interesting to see how his plan unfolds, one way or another.
