RIM has finally provided the world with a smartphone which will benefit not only business users, but others too. The Blackberry Torch 9800 has some truly compelling features which can be accessed via the very pretty 3.2 inch touch screen, these features cover a range of smartphone functions including the web browser and messaging areas of the interface. The new Blackberry 6 OS is a slick runner while the processor is just pokey enough for quick web browsing and e-mailing.

RIM has not forgotten that a Blackberry's primary function is messaging, so a super cool QWERTY keyboard has been discretely mounted behind the screen; it slides down to provide optimized messaging support when needed. The slider mechanism is very fluid and well constructed while the rest of the phone is draped in a stylish chrome casing and compliments the rich colours found on the capacitive 3.2 inch HVGA (480 x 360) display.

At the base of any good smartphone is its Operating System, and at the core of the Torch is the Blackberry 6 OS. There are a number of reinvented features which are quite similar to the previous version, but overall the 6 OS is a vast improvement on the clumsier, older 5 OS. The new interface host multiple home screens to be swiped through and each can be assigned there own unique set of apps and features.

A dedicated SNS app call "Social Feeds" lets users view updates and messages from the likes of Twitter and Facebook. These can be viewed as separate entities or as a combined stream of information. The Blackberry Torch can also support a number of e-mail accounts from sites like Gmail and Hotmail and there is an integrated document viewer. Along with IM accounts from various providers including Blackberry Messenger and Gtalk the Torch also supports your basic SMS, MMS and social networking needs.

As you may have noticed, all the good smartphones have 3G and Wi Fi. 3G network support offers consistent connectivity while Wi Fi will provide super fast connections at WLAN hotspots like airports or selected cafe/bistro. The WebKit browser lets you save bookmarks whilst you get almost a full screen web page overview, which is quite a rare feature, even on some of the best phones. Sites load very quickly and there is support for basic Flash Lite media.

Equipped with tons of settings and plenty of editing tools, the 5MP camera is one of the best I have seen from RIM this year. Simple imagery is very crisp while video recordings are packed with clarity. The video player offers premium playback quality while the music player supports playback for multiple file types, including mp3. Users can also enjoy the benefits of Bluetooth, FM radio, upgradeable memory (microSD up to 32GB), GPS with Blackberry Maps and a 3.5mm AV connection for headphones.

The Blackberry Torch hosts an extensive spec list which boasts some impressive features, the slide out QWERTY keyboard is a very nice feature while access to the new, slick, Blackberry App World 2.0 lets users customize there own experience with its online downloading facilities. A fully capable smartphone, the Blackberry Torch would be a beneficial addition to anyone's pocket.
