IT SEEMS WE HAVE TO BLAME SOMEBODY – WHO? (BESIDES ART FRIED)

I don't know about you folks but at this point with foreclosures mounting and the best experts predicting another 4 to 5 million in the upcoming 24 months this almost seems like an exercise in futility.  But, seeing how I had to shoulder a lot of this blame, at least according to certain groups and people, it does demand my attention.  If you really think about it there really are only three major players in this game.  You the home owner who has the most at stake, the lending community and of course the people who started this whole Loan Modification mess, the government.

If you listen to the Media and all of the experts it was me, Art Fried, and my fellow Loan Modification experts who were attempting to help the people getting hurt the worst, the home owner.  I already admitted before that there were some bad apples in the barrel and yes they bilked some people out of their money and potentially they wound up losing the homes they were going to lose anyway.  How can we even apply a number here?  There really are no statistics available but it certainly sounded good to be able to blame someone.

I want to stop a moment and share a quick story.  In the last quarter of 2009 I attended a meeting held in a church in south central Phoenix.  It was actually promoted as a "Vent" against the Loan Mod companies.  I was impressed when I walked into the room.  Conservatively there were over a hundred people in attendance and the group included Attorney General Terry Goddard, members of his staff, People from HUD who flew in from Washington and California, Arizona Housing Council people, lawyers, bankers and a host of religious leaders. I was also leery and simply put Art instead of Art Fried on my name tag.   They even served us lunch.  It was impressive to say the least and the entire focus was to warn people away from paying for help saving your home when it was all provided for free by the government and the banks.  They encouraged religious leaders to carry that message to their congregations from their pulpits.  I had this crazy vision of a group of financial serial killers running around ruining every neighborhood in the city.  There must be literally thousands of these culprits running around bringing the city to its knees based on the pure star power in that room.  I wonder what was spent in expenses paid by the citizens to bring this off just to take on this hoard of marauding pillagers.

You can do all the research in the world and when all is said and done I challenge any of you to find the names of more then a few dozen people offering the service in the Valley which has a population of 4 million people.  Then ask yourself the other really big question, how many people on the verge of foreclosure could even afford to pay someone for help.  They needed the free help and did they get it?  A great question I think.

This is where it got really funny and really sad all at the same time.  Our legislature spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to draft a bill to license loan modification companies because of course once the government controls them everything will be fine.  And guess what kind of a license it is?   Yep, a banking related license so the people who brought you a 4% success rate in granting Loan Mods is now overseeing the people who have become a pain in their collective butts because they hold the banks feet to the fire and pushes them to do the job they are supposed to do for free.  See a trend here my friends?

To top it off the HUD people announced that a new enforcement commission is being formed to take care of the complaints against this group of criminals.  More people … more money…and for what?
