Darkness is the enemy of anyone employing a ranged weapon. Under cover of darkness, your opponents can sneak up to or around you, negating the benefit of a ranged weapon. It may also mean your prey getting away from you, which could lead to a failed hunting trip. Night scopes are not just tactical tools used by military and paramilitary forces, but also civilians on hunting trips. They are considered essential in tactical kits or spy gear.

Night scopes are for the huge part limited access devices for civilians. In reality, the United States of America, civilians are only permitted to buy and own Generation 1 devices, which have intensification factors of an insignificant 1000x, compared to the 20000x to 50000x for military models. Other regions of the Earth might have different systems, but there are limits on night vision scopes, goggles, binoculars, and telescopes sometimes all over the world.

The use of scopes to enhance shooting at night was first seen in action during World War II, where infrared night scopes like the M1 and M3 models were issued to snipers.

The arrival of passive devices in the Vietnam War led to the popularization of stealthier, more movable night scopes. Previous models were massive, weighing several kilograms, whereas the new models like the AN/PVS-4 Starlight scope were relatively smaller. As such, civilian models are much bulkier and heavier than modern military models.
