Steel(Ing) The Future : Day 1
The stage was set for the inauguration of Global Steel 2010, a unique conference of, for and by the steel making fraternity from all around the globe. A Gujarat NRE and The Economic Times presentation, the three-day conference from February 11-13 at InterContinental The Lalit Resort, Goa, was an effort to highlight the fact that it was time to ‘steel’ ahead! Day 1: The lobby of the resort portrayed a picture perfect as the who’s who from the corporate world descended (many with their families) from far and near. Those who came alone, surely didn’t get the chance to miss home, such was the warm reception! There was a lot of hurried activity as more than 200 delegates and guests from 15 countries exchanged pleasantries and completed the registration process. The crowd, which swelled in number as the day passed, was a healthy mix of bigwigs from all over India and abroad. The CEOs and MDs, who otherwise remain a busy lot, seemed relaxed. “We hope to have an enriching experience here, thanks to the organizers. After all, Goa casts its magic the moment you set foot on this land,” said Amit Majumdar, managing director, Minmet Resources International. Welcoming delegates at the inaugural session in the evening, Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka, Chairman and Managing Director, Gujarat NRE Coke Limited, expressed his pleasure in presenting Global Steel 2010, which he felt “is the culmination of extensive deliberations in an effort to bring together the steel as well as the raw material industry under one roof.” That Global Steel 2010 was indeed unique in its ways, was once again proved as all those sharing the dais came together to light the lamp. “Global Steel has been able to achieve a lot and is creating a niche for itself towards attracting the best minds and scattered skills sets from around the world to work towards a common goal – making steel sinews for the nation,” said Mr Jagatramka. Conference co-chairman with Mr Jagatramka, Dr Neil J Bristow, Chief Consultant, H&W Worldwide Consulting Limited, Australia, introduced Global Steel 2010 on a positive note. “This conference is the move in the right direction where we learn from the past and talk into the future. We meet here, learn and go away enriched. The panel this year has the right mix of experts from finance, sharing thoughts with those from the raw materials industry or those from the field of strategic management,” said Mr Bristow. In his keynote address, Mr S Murari, Director, Coal India Limited, highlighted the present trends in the industry and gave an optimistic picture of the days to come. Also present on the occasion was Mr G L Tandon, former CMD of Coal India Limited. The chief guest of the evening, Mr S K Roongta, Chairman, SAIL, gave a truly enriching talk on ‘India’s Steel Vision 2020 – Role and Future Plans of SAIL’. “The industry has a clear advantage this decade. During the period 2001- 07, we have achieved twice the growth achieved between 1950 to 2000. However, the emergence of China is a point to be noted. While there has been a 47% rise in steel production in China, ours stand at a marginal 5% in 2009. India has the potential to become the second largest steel consuming nation by 2015,” said Mr Roongta on an optimistic note. “If 13% cumulative annual growth rate of consumption is maintained, then a production figure of 200 MT is highly achievable by 2020,” he added. The expert went on to mention that the capacity drivers that will aid India in its journey forward include: Domestic demand Relative competitive advantage in the world market and Access to cheap raw materials. He, however, cautioned against the capacity breakers such as land acquisition problems, insufficient infrastructure, capital movement to more profitable businesses, strong imports etc. In his address, special guest, Mr Brad Mullard, Executive Director, Minerals, Industry and Investment, NSW, Australia, highlighted the mining scenario in Australia while mentioning how there’s a growing scope for Indo-Australian partnership in this area. The vote of thanks for the inaugural session was delivered by Mr Debashish Ghosh, Director, The Times Group. “As they say, there’s a little bit of steel in everbody’s life. The future of steel is very bright. I congratulate all those who have come from far and near in making this conference an event worth remembering. The Times Group has always supported and taken the initiative to highlight on such issues of national and global importance,” said Mr Ghosh. An exposition was also inaugurated by Mr Roongta which saw visitors throng the stalls of SAIL, Axis Bank, Gujarat NRE, Suzlon, National Insurance and Steel Briefing. Worth mentioning was the stall set up by Global Steel 2010 partner state Team Orissa. A networking dinner, with a Goan band playing some soulful music, seemed the perfect balm to a day that saw a lot of activity.
