The Bayonet is a sharp weapon that go's on the end of a rifle. This weapon can be a spike, knife, dagger, or even a sword. This weapon is a defiantly a weapon of last resort., and makes the gun a very effective spear. No one is really sure where the bayonet made its first appearance or there it is from.

The name bayonet I has been around senses the 16th century. There is no evidences that what it is used for today is that it was used for back then. It could have just been the name of a knife. There really is no hard evidence for what it was used. I think that most of us could guess it was used for military purposes. The legend is that in 17th century France there was a conflict in a southern French town called Bayonne. The people of this town after running out of ammunition stuck there knives down the muzzle of there muskets and that this was the beginning of the bayonet. Others think that the Bayonet was made for hunters. The first firearms where not the most reliable firearms, so in moments that the hunter might be in a vulnerable position, if there where a miss fire, or a missed shot. You could defend yourself from a dangerous animal. no one knows if either of these are true but both seem realistic. There is also a thought that it might come form China.

Later the bayonet was used by the French army, and was used by most European armies in the 1660s. With the first guns the bayonet was a great asset. They where very hard to load and if you had the powder and ball in paper the best most men could do is 3-4 shots in a minute. This made the bayonet very useful. Most of the battles with these guns ended with close combat, and having a knife on the end of your gun would have be a big help. The first bayonets where plugs that went strait into the muzzle, so you could not fire the gun when it was in. these plugs where used by many French and English regimented. Later the ring bayonet was made and this allowed the men to still be able to load and fire there guns and still have the blade on the end of there gun.

Bayonet started to be made triangular. people think the reason it was made this way was to make it harder to sew up. This is not true it was made this way to make them light and flexible. But still strong enough to stab a man. This weapon has gone though lots of changes and put on all sorts of guns even pistols. all thought most people think that putting them on pistols was a big waist people where, and are fascinated with the bayonet.

The modern bayonet most of the time is a knife shaped weapon and can be found on, or a attachment to put a bayonet on. One of the guns that you will almost always see a bayonet on is the SKS. You can find knife, cruciform, or triangular shaped blades. With modern war the bayonet has sort of out lived its usefulness. You have almost no chance of being killed with a Bayonet. Even thought some military units still train you on how to use them. You will almost never get the chance to use this training. People still put them on there guns but it is more just for looks now.
