Magic and Miscief

I have a story to tell and I must tell someone...why not you. I have been playing with some things that might not be best to play with. It has a magic-like appeal to it though and magic has always been a soft spot for me. I found an old...ah...I guess you could call it a book. It is a bunch a pages written on old parchment bound in leather cords. I found it beneath the floor of an old cabin that's rotting in the woods near a lake up north. A place I like to occasionally retreat to. That old cabin is on its last leg but still serves a purpose when its raining hard and a dry place to sleep is required. There are a few spots inside it that the rain can't get to.

Anyway, I was there last year, at the lake fishing, and it rained the whole time. I Spent a number of nights in that cabin, hungry and cold...the fish weren't biting with all that rain. With all my meandering in and out of the place, I kicked up a loose floor board. Nearly twisted my ankle in the process. Annoyed at the whole trip being a wash out and at the cabin for trying to disable me, I threw that board through an already broken window. Viola! There was this book sitting pretty in an old open box beneath the floor. Naturally I took it. I couldn't read the writing at the time. It was faded and in some language I didn't recognize. I brought that puppy home thinking it might be worth something to someone and could be an easy money maker for me. The fishing trip wasn't a total loss, I caught me a treasure instead of a fish.

When I got home, curiosity got the best of me and I tried finding someway to translate the words I could make out. Babble-fish didn't help. I didn't know what language I was translating from. I tried a few of the middle eastern languages but to no avail. I thought maybe if I found letters somewhere on the internet, I would be able to move forward from there. Dead end. I looked up old languages all over the place and couldn't find anything that looked the same as the words in that book. I had all but given up when I was slapped in the face with blind luck. There I was, sitting with a beer on the porch with my feet up on the railing, that book in my lap and the sun setting infront of me. I had already downed a couple beer and the bottles stood like soldiers in a line on the railing. Well, the setting sun shone through those brown bottles casting a shaded light onto the book on my lap. I had glanced down through the bottle in my hand and saw the letters on the front of the book made sense within the ring of the bottom of my bottle. Around the outside of the bottle, it was the same garbled words they always were. It was like some sort of magic looking glass. I nearly fell off my chair I was so surprised at what I discovered. The effect didn't last long. There was no way I could halt the sun in its tracks so I could read the darn thing.Didn't matter, I have always been the resourceful one. I grabbed my empty bottles and my book and ran into the house. I set up my desk lamp so it shone through the bottles and onto the book and used another empty like a looking scope. Sure as rain it worked! I could read the words in that old book.

Guess what kind of book it was...yep, if you guess a magic book, you would be correct. My own book of magic...imagine that. I was happier then a pig in...well I mean to say I was happy. There were warnings that if the spells casted were not correct, the enchanter may die. I chalked that up to scare tactics, like curses written on the tombs of mummies in Egypt. I haven't died yet so that says it all doesn't it. There are seven spells in this book. I know there are other such books out there cause those pages told me so. Of the seven spells, I have tried three. One was a spell that made growing things grow bigger. I used it on my tomatoes out back and guess what...my tomatoes are the size of basketballs.

The second spell I used was one that purified water. Naturally, I made the most obnoxious soup out of garbage and dirt and oil and water and cast my spell. Sure enough, that soup became clear clean water and it tasted like it came fresh from a spring in the ground. Too cool eh!?

That was when I flipped to the last spell in the book and gave that a whirl. Of all seven spells in this book, this one had the most warnings attached to it. It was a spell to make something dead come alive. I think it was meant for plants cause it said not to use on people or animals. I have always like to do my own thing so naturally.... Lets just say I didn't pay much attention to the warnings. I started small, I found an earth worm that was drying out in the sun. Dead as a door nail it was. I cast the spell and would you know it but the darn thing hitched and wriggled and came to life. Looked like a normal enough worm when it was all said and done. Always a clever man, I cast a growing spell on it to see what would happen. The worm grew fat as my water hose and as long as my arm. Have you ever seen what a worm looks like up real close? So close you can see its mouth and face? There are little whiskers that sprout out all over it and its mouth is a stretchy hole that pulls in whatever it touches. It is as gross as it is amazing to see. Worms make sounds to. I discovered that when I put the gloves on and feed him to my meat grinder. What do you think I was I going to do with a giant worm? Keep it as a pet? No way Marvin Gay! Looking back, I should have tried the water purifying spell on the worm. Oh well, there are four more spells in this book I have yet to try. And try them I will. Who knows what kind of wonders I may be able to create.

Speaking of which, I am ready to try the next spell. It is suppose to create seed from what ever it is casted on. I wonder how that works on grasshoppers....
