What is a Commemorative Silver Dollar

When it comes to making a commemorative silver dollar, no country does it more often or does it better than the United States of America. Almost every major event, occasion or important individual has had a commemorative silver dollar designed and minted in its honor. This is what makes the U.S. such a wonderful place to live and also what keeps coin collectors, amateur and professional, happy and constantly shopping for their favorite new or old commemorative silver dollar.

Commemorative dollars have been around since the days of the Romans. They have a genuine appeal to them not only because of the intricate craftsmanship that goes into their design but also because of their historical significance. Some of the more popular commemorative silver dollars include the Statue of Liberty, Olympic, USO, Eisenhower, Constitution, West Point and more.

Popular Past Commemorative Silver Dollars

• Olympic Commemorative 2-pc set - This set is the first U.S. Olympic coin set ever and consists of .900 fine Silver Dollars for the 1983-S and the 1984-S Olympics in Los Angeles.

• 1987 Constitution Commemorative Silver Dollar is a 90% silver coin that was minted in San Francisco and pays tribute to the Constitution with the words THE US CONSTITUTION 200 ANNIVERSARY on the top of the coin and 1787 LIBERTY 1987 on the bottom.

• 1991 Mount Rushmore silver dollar portrays an inscription of Mount Rushmore on the front of the coin with LIBERTY on the top and a laurel wreath on the bottom and the words GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY right below the drawing of Mount Rushmore to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

• West Point Bicentennial commemorative silver dollar has a picture of the famous West Point on the front of the coin and 1802 LIBERTY 2002 right above the picture.

• 1979 Susan B. Anthony Silver Dollars are coins made with .750 copper and .250 nickel and minted in Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco. They are the first small size Dollar coin as well as the first with an identifiable woman.

• Eisenhower Silver Dollar Set is an 11-pc set of Eisenhower Dollars that also includes Bicentennial coins. These were the last large size dollars that were to be minted and were completed 1971 to 1978.

Although this appears to be only a short list of commemorative dollars, you'll find there are many more to choose from and they're in a wide variety of styles and prices ranges.

Newest and Latest Commemorative

The year 2009 brings the coin collectors and the public in general a very special commemorative silver dollar in the Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar. The coin is to celebrate 2000 years since the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Although mintage will only be at 500,000 coins, they will also be used to raise money for the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. The Lincoln coin is 90% silver with a portrait of Old Abe designed by Justin Kunz. The reverse of the coin has a laurel wreath along with the last 43 words of Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address along with Lincoln's signature. In terms of investment purposes, this dollar looks to have the makings of being a great addition to any portfolio.
