How do you know what accessories you may need for your new airsoft gun? That depends on the gun type, use of the gun and your style of play. I will explain the different accessory options you have and why you may need to use some of them.

Lets start at the foundation of what holds the accessory to your gun. These are called rails. These rails come in 2 main styles. There are Picatinny and Weaver rails. The Picatinny rails are compatible with gear made for both Weaver and Picatinny. These rails are machined with high precision to provide an excellent base for precision gear. Weaver rails usually do not work for both types.

Airsoft sights and scopes are becoming much more popular as they add a more realistic tactical feel to the game. A sight or a scope is a device that allows the shooter to aim with extreme accuracy. The simplest kind of sights are open sights. Most guns come with these on them.

A red dot sight is cylindrical in shape and has a red dot inside that the shooter uses to aim. A telescopic sight, or scope, can magnify what the user is aiming at. These should only be used in outdoor large scale battlefield. They would be of no use in close quarters combat.

There are also laser sights that are usually used on smaller assault rifles and pistols. They project on red or green dot on the target. These are used primarily in close quarters combat where the targets are in short range. The green dot is used in high light situations and the red dot is used in darker environments.

Tactical lights are for nighttime battles or low light situations in CQB. They mount using the Picatinny or Weaver rails. Usually using LED lights, they are very bright and effective. They can mount on most pistols and assault rifles.
